PORTAL
The idea for the portal and the guidance in creating it came from a youtube tutorial by FX Hive.
FX Hive (2017) Krakatoa and 3dsmax - Portal effect tutorial part1

I changed the wind from a clockwise direction to an anti-clockwise direction to get rid of the fan effect at the top of the portal.
Picture
I turned on the colour override setting and changed the particle colour to white.
Picture
I increased the amount of particles to create a denser more detailed look.

Worked out that the wind wasn't affecting the particles because I hadn't included it as a force in my particle system. Then I could see the simulation in my viewport and adjust the speed of the particles and the force of the wind until I achieved a similar effect to what is seen in the reference video.
